  Jan was married in Franekeradeel on May 19, 1849, at the age of 27 to Dieuwke Franses Bergsma (aged 24 years), born in Arum on October 22, 1824, daughter of Frans Feikes Bergsma (jobless, peat barge proprietor, schuiteboer, worker and worker) and Trientje Sjoerds Bastien (daily help), maid servant, died in Tzum on February 28, 1882, aged 57 years.
  Dieuwke was married afterwards in Franekeradeel on January 5, 1856, at the age of 31 to Gerrit Jelles Bijlsma (aged 32 years), born in Tzum on March 1, 1823, son of Jelle Gerrits Bijlsma and Sipkje Jacobs Hilverda.
